Safety Coverage

Pierce Manufacturing Inc. introduces several safety enhancements in its product lineup, including a roll-up hose bed cover, Roll Stability Control (RSC) system, rear air curtains for its Side Roll Protection system and luminescent rung covers that are now standard on its steel aerials.

The roll-up hose bed cover rolls forward out of the way of the hose bed for easier hose loading at the top of the truck. The solid cover protects the hose from all elements and also provides an NFPA-compliant walking surface, yet it does not add to overall height as most aluminum covers do when opened.

The RSC is an optional feature of the anti-lock braking system and will be available beginning September 2005. It is designed to help maintain vehicle stability and aid in reducing vehicle side rolls. When the RSC system senses conditions that may result in a side roll, it can reduce engine torque, engage the engine retarder and apply pressure to the drive axle brakes in order to slow the vehicle.

The addition of the rear air curtains inside the crew cab offers protection to occupants in the cab in the case of a side roll event. With the Pierce system, during a roll an inflatable tubular structure or curtain—positioned in the trim above the door or attached to ABTS seats in the crew cab—deploys across the window and side of the vehicle interior to protect the occupants’ head during impact.

Finally, the rung covers increase visibility during egress and do not need electrical connections or amp draw. The illumination lasts for up to 12 hours and provides extra step detection during night fire scenes. This safety enhancement is available to the fire service exclusively through Pierce under a five-year agreement with Safeguard Technologies, the manufacturer of the rung covers.
