Speak From the Hat

Etrema and its design partner, FeOnic, have developed an enhanced audio communication device that features a “smart” material that turns the entire helmet worn by a first responder into a speaker. According to the developers, the device could begin production in early 2006. The material is Terfenol-D, and it is already used in portable music players and the Whispering Window, which converts a store window into a sound radiator. The communications device consists of adding a small, solid-state transducer, powered by a replaceable 9-volt battery, to a safety helmet. The device converts the parabolic shape of the helmet into a three-dimensional speaker, where the focus of the sound is within the user’s head itself. Weighing just over two ounces, the device is connected to the firefighter’s existing radio, and in tests has demonstrated clear signals that can be heard even in 100dB conditions while in full gear including face masks.
